A network of international loans
In parallel with the programme of temporary exhibitions in the ‘Salle des Essais’, in the south wing, and the Galerie des Beaux-Arts, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux provides substantial support to French and foreign programming by loaning works from its collections. The wealth and diversity of those collections allows the museum to be present in a large number of exhibitions. In this way, the many new audiences have access to the collection and specialists are able to study its contents.
This aspect of the museum’s activity helps to spread the influence of its collected works and also to strengthen partnerships and relationships within a network of museums and other institutions, in France and abroad. We have, in particular, maintained special relationships within the FRAME (French Regional and American Museum Exchange) network, made up of 13 museums in North America and 13 in France, among them the Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux.
The museum’s loans and deposits policy is carried out in four main ways
- the traditional loan for national and international exhibitions
- various collaborative partnerships for exhibitions in other venues
- the museum’s own exhibitions going on tour
- deposits of works in other institutions and museums in Bordeaux, France and Europe.
Whenever a picture or a sculpture is borrowed from our collections, the Museum adds new works from our collection in storage to the permanent collection to make sure it is not neglected.
Lending works can also be an opportunity to carry out necessary restoration work prior to their loan. For reasons of preservation, however, it is mostly paintings on canvas that are approved for travel.
By loaning out artworks, irrespective of their number or fame, the museum is contributing to the success of exhibitions organized in France and abroad.
